We start in Bordeaux, France and travel the world, finishing in Australia listening to the Blues. These are some amazing people showing their passion for music and shows—where the Blues started in the deep south of the USA, it’s now world-wide.

Barry Mc Cabe comes from Virginia, Co. Cavan, Ireland but has travelled all over the world to bring his music to the people. He has been working extensively on the European mainland over the past ten years, he has toured in the US and also in such far away lands as Egypt! Some say the bagpipes originated in Egypt and while we’re waiting for that fact to be confirmed we can confirm that they all loved Barry’s mixture of blues and Irish music over there.
Within the blues world, MacLeod is known for his quality recordings which feature superb songwriting, guitar wizardry, warm soulful vocals, wit, and unforgettable live performances.

From St. Louis MO, the man overcame abuse and a crippling stutter to emerge as one of the most highly respected Bluesmen on the scene today. Like the old masters he learned from, Doug’s music expresses life and times on a level that makes the listener feel as if he knows each person inside out. After an illustrious career primarily on the regional blues circuit, this Texas crooner throws his hat into the international blues ring with the effortless virtuosity of a seasoned artist. Holt first shook hands with the music at the tender age of six, thanks to an uncle who just happened to be a prison guard at the state penitentiary in Huntsville. Holt sat on the front row, surrounded by cigarette smoke and prisoners chained together at the arms and legs, while Jerry Lee Lewis essentially destroyed the piano and brought the house down. Twelve years later, after attending the Mississippi Delta Blues Festival, the spark was rekindled.

Holt played the bars and juke joints in Memphis and learned at the feet of Delta blues legends James “Son” Thomas and Willie Foster. Al “T-N-T” Braggs dubbed Holt -”The original Blue Eyed Soul“ Holt describes his debut CD as “blues with funk on the side. Down and clean more than down and dirty.” But don’t mistake that to mean that there is not nastiness. Edwin is hugely influenced by both Johnny Taylor and Ray Charles. Second Time Around certainly exhibits the same attitude and kinds of arrangements. Several tunes have a “big band” sound with horns and even a choir at one point, but are also seasoned in a Texas fashion with touches of nasty harmonica and resonator slide guitar.

I start of with some easy Jazz and progress to a rockin’ blues number at the end. A fun episode with some real artists.

Artist: GILES - Fallen Angel
GILES are a guitar-led trio based in the North West of England. They have just released their 4th album and regularly tour the whole of Europe. Their first gigs in the States are scheduled for this year too.
http://www.gilesmusic.com/

Artist: Teresa James & the Rhythm Tramps - Wind Cries the Blues
From the opening notes of the bottleneck slide to the first entrance of her gutsy, soulful voice, it’s clear that Teresa James knows where she’s going.. ‘Oh Yeah’ is another fine workout from this LA stage and studio veteran. Funky and greasy, where New Orleans meets Texas Blues and everyone has a good time. These two quotes say it all: “Teresa James is a true original. When she sings you can feel it in your bones.” (Levon Helm) / “I’ve been a fan of Teresa’s singing for a long time” (Bonnie Raitt)
Although the giants of the music industry (Los Angeles, New York,Atlanta, Miami,Nashville,Memphis) have their own place in music, the little known corner of West Central Florida will soon be making a buzz in the music world. The group “Urbanhood” is one of those groups pioneering an effort to introduce the world to this fresh new sound. Their music is sexy, sultry, funky and smooth. The first single release Summer Heat (Parts I and II from the CD titled “Streetminded”) will have you hitting the replay button over and over again to experience that musical love affair you developed from hearing it for the very first time. Along with this single “Urbanhood” has added a bonus single for your listening enjoyment an instrumental entitled “You Ride.” It’s a Jazzy instrumental that smoothly takes you on a ride that encompasses one the many facets that the Urbanhood sound possess. So if you are ready to experience something fresh and new, music that will make you feel good rather than feeling mad, heartbroken and vindictive. Try a prescription of Urbanhood I am sure you will feel much better.

What a collection I’ve found this week… eclectic, sensual, and gut grabbing. All that and more as we trip through some independent artists who really know their stuff.

Michele Mele - I can’t sing the blues
Michele Mele - Why Choose
A native of Toronto, Michele Mele has been writing for 20 years. “feel” is her 3rd cd of original material in the past 6 years.”feel” follows her previous cds “Like This” and “Laugh”. A prolific writer and enthusiastic and dynamic performer Michele offers her band and audience a wonderful musical experience all round. www.michelemele.com

Artist: Trouble & Strife - Keep on Drinking
Trouble & Strife are a band who make no excuses for playing only the blues. Bruce & Larry have been playing their brand of soulful low down, take your time blues together for over nine years. Bruce’s son Michael Ley is an exciting young guitarist who really gets what the blues are all about. Add in one of Canada’s best Blues drummers, Maureen Br own, and the highly talented Greg Smith on Bass and you have a poupouri of blues talent! Bruce & Larry both make their homes in the beautifull hills surrounding Orangeville Ontario. http://www.troubleandstrife.ca/

Saturday Night Fish Fry - Pachuko Hop
Very rarely does a band come along that can basically rewrite classic R&B songs and make them sound fresh, or write modern songs that could easily have been pulled from a 50’s era juke box. An astonishing feat indeed and it seems so easy for Bill King and his band, ‘Saturday Nite Fish Fry’. Their new release “Rhythm & Soul” (7 Arts) has a timeless quality and a very eclectic mix of great music.
http://www.emusic.com/album/10995/10995036.html?fref=2011281

Lil Ed & The Blues Imperials - Tired of Crying
Lil’ Ed Williams, although small in stature, is a true giant of the blues, and among the very last authentic West Side Chicago bluesmen. From smoking slide guitar boogies to raw-boned Chicago shuffles to the deepest slow blues, Lil’ Ed Williams is a master bluesman.
http://www.intrepidartists.com/liled.html

Albert Collins - Hooked On You
There has never been and may never be again a bluesman quite like Albert Collins. “The Master Of The Telecaster” was born on October 1, 1932, in Leona, Texas. A cousin of the legendary Lightnin’ Hopkins, Collins emerged with a blues sound and style all his own, featuring a combination of icy echo, shattering, ringing, sustained high notes, an ultra-percussive right-hand attack, and an unheard-of minor key guitar tuning (taught to him by his cousin Willow Young). Deeply influenced by T-Bone Walker, John Lee Hooker and Gatemouth Brown, Collins absorbed the sounds of Mississippi, Chicago, and especially Texas. He formed his own band in 1952, packing clubs around Houston. In the early 1960s, Collins’ “cool sound” instrumentals like the million-seller Frosty (recorded with a young Johnny Winter and Janis Joplin in attendance at the studio) and follow-ups Sno Cone and Thaw Out were all over R&B radio. Soon he was sharing stages with his idols Gatemouth Brown and T-Bone Walker.

Jen Elliott and Bluestruck - Curse on You
She was raised on traditional gospel in Jacksonville, Florida but now Jen Elliott calls New York City her home. In 2003, she had the incredible opportunity to sign with up-and-coming indie record label City Canyons Records. A few short months later, they released her debut album, THE SECRET’S OUT.

After a rather long hiatus, I’m back. I’ve made a lot of changes to my life, losing over 45 pounds and underwent back surgery. All that is behind me now (maybe a slight pun intended) and back doing my blues show, which I missed greatly.

So, here are a few tracks I’ve found to start off the new Late-Night Blues and Jazz Hangout:

More of an eclectic mix on this show. I start with Va-Rog Va-Rog, written by Carol Douglas and sung by Maria Daines. This is a track that Carol wrote to attract attention to the plight of Romanian orphans. From there, we travel all over the world to listen to some strong pieces by some very accomplished musicians and artists. Enjoy!

So, here I am sitting in 60 degrees (F) and rain in Albany, New York and speaking with Michael Barretto in 85 degree Hawaii. I really need to do some person-to-person interviews…

Michael is a one-of-a-kind gentleman, easy to know, quite open and a minute after the interview was over, I wanted to call him back and just chat. He’s that kind of person and he’s a magnificent story teller, both in words and song. When I listen to his music I can see him sitting on the front porch of his home, one leg up supporting the guitar, and a cold drink within reach.

Sit back and let the man take over for a while.

Clint Anglin has been playing since he was 16 and, although he has written some music then, it was a couple of guitars and 30 years later that he picked up the pen and started writing again. I spent some time with Clint on the telephone and we covered how and why he writes and what blues and folk music means to him. He admits that he cannot be shoved into a definite genre, but he does give it a name: “Blues Grass”. So, sit back, pour yourself a cool drink and listen to a real gentleman, Dr. Clint Anglin.

Formed in late 2001, Goofer Dust are a four-piece acoustic band from Brighton, England. The four members come from very different, though complementary, musical backgrounds. Eclectism is very much the watch word when talking about their approach to music-making, but let’s call it “Acoustic country blues meets jazz and country”. Summing up the influences, there is a mixture of country blues (a la Kelly Joe Phelps, Mance Lipcomb & Eric Bibb), Tom Waits, as well as the country stylings of Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings. Goofer Dust released a 3 track ep “Trading Faces” in August 2002 that was well received. “Blood’s Turning Black” is their first album.

Tracy Lundgren is a one-of-a-kind songbird, with a wonderful voice and lyrics, that will tempt you, like the sirens of mythology. While not strictly in the blues or jazz camp, in fact, not in any camp at all, Tracy should have a genre all her own. I found her to be refreshingly honest and willing to speak about most anything. Enjoy Tracy’s music and visit the sites below and download more of her wonderful music.

To say that Kathy Moxham and Doug Logan make beautiful music together is over-simplification. Kathy is a marvelous songwriter/stylist and Doug is one of the best guitarists you’ll ever hear. Put these two together and you get some sweet sounds that will allow you sit back, pour a drink of your choice, and smile.

This edition is about two characters, pushing some boundaries of blues story telling. Slapback Jack (Nick Potgieter) and Bad Voodoo (Tony Bell) take us on a journey through the ages of the blues, speaking about their deep south travels, their motivations, and their artistry. Besides being real fun, this interview is a blues lesson by two old friends who know their history as well as they know how to deliver the blues. All of the tracks from this episode of the Late-Night Blues and Jazz Hangout are from their Gruff Side of the Blues CD.
